A radome is a, in a broad sense, structure that protects the antenna and electronics from the environment. Classically one could think about an aircraft, where radomes are used to protect all sort of antennas from the Radar system in front of the plane, to the GPS at the top and DME at the bottom, to name a few.
Ideally the radome layer should not impact the field propagation nor the antenna,but as we can see, they can:
-Interact with the antenna, increasing the return loss.
-Degrade the beam shape, increasing the side-lobes and decreasing gain.
-Squint the beam when scanning.
-Depolarize the radiation.
So a proper engineering is needed…
New challenges require new solutions, and simulation can help us drive those innovations. For example, material modeling is critical in radome analysis, To ensure the relative accuracy of
equivalent thin material model (TSI), there are some conditions
regarding the thin material thickness, and incident angles etc.
