Opera is finite element analysis software, available for problems in 2 or 3 dimensions. It is capable of multiphysics analyses, with stress and thermal solvers available as well as the main function of electromagnetics.
Opera’s Modeller contains the ACIS solid modelling kernel from Dassault Systemes, which can be used to generate complex parametric models. Alternatively, it canread and write many different formats of CAD file, both neutral formats and CAD-specific. These include SAT, Parasolid, NX,CATIA and Solidworks. The geometry can be mixed – you can start in Opera, add a CAD model, then edit the merged models.
Opera-3d meshing has facilities for creating hexahedral, prism and tetrahedral meshes. The mesh can be a mixture of types. Meshing is automatic, requiring little or no user setting in many cases. However, it does include facilities to finely control the mesh when required.
Opera employs full nonlinear functional materials. There is the option to model a full hysteresis curve during solution, and calculate hysteretic losses directly. Magnetization and demagnetization of permanent magnets can be modelled, allowing fault conditions to be fully investigated.
The Machines Environments is an easy to use, template-driven development tools pecifically designed for electrical machines engineers. It uses the full powerof Opera to solve the models generated by the Environment. It will assist with full multiphysics modelling, and automate post-processing. It is integrated with the Opera Optimizer, allowing machines models to be rapidly optimized. We’ll look now at some of the analyses automated by the Environment
It has been in use for electrical machine design for 3 decades. In this video we’ll take a quick look at its capabilities as applied to the design of electrical machines.
